4th Street between Claflin Avenue and Cloud Street to Permanently Close August 1st
On August 1, 2016, Kansas Wesleyan University's (KWU) contractor will permanently close to traffic 4th Street between Claflin Avenue and Cloud Street.
Prior to KWU's recent improvements, 4th Street within these limits carried two way traffic on two roadbeds separated by railroad tracks. In April 2015, KWU contractors temporarily closed the northbound roadbed and diverted northbound traffic to share the southbound roadbed. On April 24, 2016, Salina's City Commission voted to permanently vacate Salina's interests in these roads and return them to KWU so KWU could beautify the area and connect their campus and athletic fields.
This section of 4th Street carried around 800 southbound and 1000 northbound vehicles per day. A Wilson & Company traffic study determined that numerous other nearby streets will easily handle the additional traffic. Motorists are encouraged to allow extra time to get to their destinations until they become familiar with the alternate routes.
